The Marine Lake & Slope
Cliffs & Marine Lake
Down to the Promenade
A "General View of Dovercourt Bay" (1933) Bell's Photography
An interesting view looking West from the old "Marine Gardens", taken shortly after the building on the Cliff Pavilion in 1932. The marine lakes were filled in during the 1920's and the gardens and seating extended. The 1930's saw more economic growth than any other decade in British history, these were the golden years for new industries such as electrical appliances, aviation & cars, the years when Morris, Humber & Austin became household names. Unemployment fell from over 2.5 million in 1931 to less than 1.5 million in 1937. While Britain basked in the summer sun, Adolf Hitler had seized power in Germany, which dominated the next decade.
