The Golf Club
The original Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club House, Station Road, Parkeston, Essex (1912)
The Harwich & Dovercourt Golf Club was formed in 1906 with a 9-hole green situated between the villages of Dovercourt and Parkeston, the land upon which the green was laid out on, consisted of thirty acres originally owned by the Garland Estate at Parkeston, since then golf has been played over the past 115 years.
In 1911 it was decided that a clubhouse was required, as very little shelter or amenities were available for the growing membership. The premises were finally opened in 1912 at a relatively cheap cost of £150. Generally, a male dominated environment, the Ladies section was formed in 1930, but the green was later requisitioned by the military in WW2, as part of the anti-tank traps, which was an integral part of the local coastal defences.
In 1964 the club finally purchased the land upon which the green had ben laid for £1,500 and a couple of years later in 1966, it was agreed that a larger and more functional club house was required, which opened on the 28th October 1967 a cost of £5,022.
The club still operates today with a link to membership below
