~ John Walker & Bells Postcards ~
Bells Photo Company Limited
One of the highest quality twentieth century publishers that came to the Harwich Area was the Bells Photo Company from London & later Westcliff-on-Sea, I have attempted to catalogue and date the postcards produced by Bells. Each of their postcards is sequentially numbered, starting with "000001...through to 150000".
So far, I have identified a couple of dozen sets from North East Essex. The evidence so far points to these photographs all having been taken in the reign of Edward the VII through to George VI (1903 - 1952), However later cards have been seen witht a new numbering covering 1952 - 1955.
Bells photographers not only took photographs of the beaches, landmarks, residential areas and events, but also the social history of the area including schools, stations, civic buildings and residents, which creates an invaluable picture of the area.
Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to find a catalogue of Bells postcards.
