The Original Ha'Penny "Toll House", Corporation Pier, Harwich (1875)
An early photo of the original two-story high “Toll House” later referred to as the "booking office" this triangular shaped building, with a bell cage and waiting rooms was more recently replaced, by the more familiar single-story building, which we still see today.
The ticket office now houses the Ha’penny Pier Visitor Centre.
The name of the pier originates from the ½d (half an old penny) toll that was charged.The Ha’penny pier, then known as the Corporation Pier, was not built until 1853.The Ha’penny Pier in Harwich is one of the UK’s only surviving wooden, working piers, which attracts thousands of visitors to Harwich each year.

An early view of racing yachts alongside the Continental pier at Harwich Quay. On the Continental Pier in the distance, there are railway carriages loaded with coal, to refuel the steamers that plied the coastline from Norfolk, though to London, as well as the continent.
The Train Ferry terminal, built in 1924 can be seen just to the left in the photograph.

This is an area of water enclosed by the arm of the pier is known as "The Pound". Berthed here is the remnant of the once great 19th century fishing fleet.
