Unloading goods at Parkeston Quay, Harwich (Sept 1932) by the "Topical Press" Agency
This unusual "birds-eye" view of the cranes at Parkeston Quay, illustrates well the importance of the port between the wars. The Danish boat has been unloading goods at the quayside, with immediate transfer to the railway wagons, en route to London and further afield. Lack of hard hats and the casual appearance of the workers, defies the fact that this was a time of high unemployment, with the "Great Depression" still at it's height and unemployment rates touching 22% in the United Kingdom.

A relatively quiet waterfront down at Parkeston Quay in the late 1920's.
The railway lines and cranes that enabled loading and unloading of coal and cargo onto local shipping, appear dormant. However the presence of railway carriages suggests otherwise.
This card is part of the famous Bells series (Real photographic postcards)
