Another classic "Wallis" postcard looking East towards the Bandstand, which was given to the town by the Co-operative society in 1901. In 1904 the Council added an additional 200 chairs for the growing audiences and later in 1929 it was enclosed with a glass-clad enclosure, to add protection from both the sea and elements ( officially opened on the 14th July 1929). A few years later in 1932, the bandstand was demolished and replaced by the New Cliff Pavilion which could seat 330 people.

The publisher of the postcard was "Frank Wallis", one of the best local social history photographers in the area.
This photo proved very popular and was used for several cards, including a coloured variety.

~ S.1266 Lower Esplanade & Bandstand, Dovercourt Bay (1908) Kingsway Real Photo H&D F~
The "Kingsway Real Photo Series" were high quality postcards, that were very popular in the Edwardian period around the Harwich area.
This company went on to produce many military and shipping series, with over 20,000 cards produced, right up to the 1940's.
This set is amusing with some early "photo bombing" by a smartly dressed gent, who "casually" appears in many different photo shots of the area.
Who would have thought that such behaviour was acceptable 110 years ago, some early social networking perhaps... ?.
