~ A Brief History of Dovercourt Bay Caravan Camp in Essex ~
In 1950 Mr C. J. Vidler opened the Dovercourt Caravan Site with just seven caravans. By 1954 facilities had been improved considerably with the number of caravans rising to 250. This eventually rose to over 550 caravans.
In 1959 Hammerton Leisure Limited was set up as a business, part of which was to trade in 2nd hand Caravans, eventually the owner Stephen Hammerton took over the business alongside Hammerton Caravan Group Limited.
The caravan camp was later renamed as “The Haven Caravan Park” which was owned and run by “Hammerton Leisure Limited” until January 2020 when it was then taken over by “Park Holidays”.
Much of the land that was not built on, but also belonged to Hammerton Leisure and now belonging to Park Holidays Facilities, has continued to be improved.
There is also a much smaller caravan camp close by called “Greenacres”.
