The Dovercourt Boating Lake, Model Yacht Pond & Paddling Pools
With high unemployment in the 1920’s the Harwich Town Council claimed grants from central Government’s to reduce the unemployment rate, with up to 75% of the costs covered to improve the sea front facilities at Dovercourt. The model yacht pond was built with the help of these grants and opened in 1923.
The boating lake was built and leased to Mr J. Cann who opened at 8am and charged 6d per half hour per person.
The model yacht pond, was very popular and opened in the same year and could be used freely by members of the public except when the Model Yacht Club was racing – Wednesday evenings and Saturday afternoons and evenings.
The putting greens were added along with the tennis courts to add to the attraction of Dovercourt as a resort with plenty for the holidaymakers to do.

The Dovercourt Paddling Pools
A smaller children’s paddling pool was added in 1924, but had been a constant source of problems due to the leaks since the war and in 1953 it was filled in and left as an open space. A much smaller paddling walled pool was added during the 1960's.
