1900 - 2000 ~ An oasis of calm in a busy port town
Cox's Pond situated just before the entrance to the Old Town of Harwich, was an early fragment of the ditch, and creeks that once surrounded the town, giving the people of Medieval Harwich protection from their foes. It was also a watering place for horses, the horse and carriage being the main method of transport for many people. The little wooden house for the ducks was added later, as were the fountain, public seats, ducks and geese.
In earlier years it was also something of a children’s playground with children and even adults hunting for coins in Cox’s Pond.
It is thought probable that the name Cox comes from an eighteenth century banking family, bankers to the army, who may well have contributed toward its establishment.
They are better known in military circles as Cox and Kings, the Army bankers.
