Around 1929, the existing bandstand built by the Co-operative in 1904, was partly enclosed with a protective shelter from the elements. The council also provided additional seating and these enhancements came with costs which needed to be recovered, so began the game of "dodge" the deck chair attendant, in order to buy a penny ice cream !
This protective enclosure was so popular, it was extended further in 1931, with the construction on the Cliff Pavilion, which was sadly demolished in 1972.
