Looking North towards the Quay, West Street, Harwich, Essex (1890)
This rare Victorian photograph of West Street, Harwich captures a street full of life and activity, but devoid of all motor vehicles, with a horse and cart, on delivery to the "Spread Eagle Inn" reputed to be the oldest pub in Harwich (dating back to 1684).
West Street contained a rich mixture of residential and commercial properties, which included residential apartments, confectionery stores, pawnbrokers, boot makers, fishmongers, the Co-op and not forgetting Humphreys the Bakery.
Well dressed children can be seen playing out on the road, with hoops and sticks, suggesting it was a Sunday or even a holiday. Other later views, show little change over the years, except when major rebuilding took place in the 1960's & 1970's.
