Fronks Road, Dovercourt Bay (1921) Wallis H&D CIII FW
An interesting view looking East along Fronks Road, Dovercourt taken around 1921. Note the newly erected telephone poles, with the introduction of phone lines into the more affluent homes. The original photograph was taken near the junction of St Michael's Road and Fronk's Avenue, looking East. Postcode for the nearest location is CO12 4GE click here for Google Earth imagery.
This unusual view looking East towards Harwich is at the junction of St Georges Avenue and Fronks Road, it is a classic "Wallis" card, capturing residents, animals and tourists alike, posted in the summer of 1920.
The owner of the "Dovercourt Saints" (Donkeys) and "Goat carts" was Jim Osborne, who also used to run a taxi service between Dovercourt Station and the beach. The same view was reproduced again in 1922 (colour) and again in 1925 (B&W) as production costs of photography increased, with the onset of the recession during the late 1920's.
Most "Donkey" & "Goat" cards of this period centred around the bottom of Beach Road, near the Retreat.
Fronks Rd, Dovercourt (1913) By Wallis H&D CIII FW
Fronks Road, Dovercourt, Looking East towards Harwich (1913) by Wallis.
An interesting view taken by local photographer Frank Wallis, from the top of St Georges Avenue looking East, down Fronks Road towards the sea, just prior to the outbreak of World War One, in the following year.
The sender of the card was employed in one of the houses (marked with an "X") and marked on the card, how close the Sea was (obviously a "Town Dweller" from Reading, Berkshire).
The view has changed little in over a 110 Years
