The Casualties, Injuries and a "Lost" Generation
01 23743 Military Hospital, Harwich (1918) Valentines H&D FW
The Great Eastern Railway Military (V.A.D) Hospital, Harwich Quay 1915.
At the start of World War One in 1914, V.A.D ( Voluntary Aid Detachment) Hospitals sprung up throughout Essex to provide support for the Territorial Army training and for injuries to troops following fighting on the Western Front (Belgium and France).
The Great Eastern Hotel, was one of the many buildings in the Harwich area requisitioned by the Government in 1915, it was described as a Military Hospital staffed by Essex VAD, with Mr. Etherden as the Commandant.
The Hospital provided beds for 110 other ranks, particularly busy between May - October 1915.
At the going down of the sun...We will remember them.
