History repeats itself.... In 1906 the Harwich Conservative committee room supporting Harry Newton was also occupied upstairs by a Liberal supporter of Arthur Lever the Liberal candidate who was eventually elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Harwich in 1906. The atmosphere at the doorway downstairs must have been tense, as it was a closely fought election, with the Liberals beating the Conservatives, although this was reversed in 1910.
Arthur Lever served as a Justice of the Peace in Essex. In 1906 he was appointed to the Royal Commission on Coast Erosion and Afforestation, serving until 1911. He lost his Harwich seat to the Conservatives at the January 1910 General Election. At the December 1910 General Election he stood unsuccessfully at Wolverhampton South.
