~ History of the Boating Lakes ~
The Opening of the Boating Lake, Dovercourt in early 1923
Postcard is dated 14th July 1923, with sender saying they had been on the lake.
These ponds were built in the 1920's with Government grants designed to help unemployment across the country. On the larger of the two lakes, boats can be hired, while the smaller lake is used for yachts and model craft. A smaller children’s paddling pool was added at a later date, but had been a constant source of problems due to the leaks since the war and in 1953 it was filled in and left as an open space. The old Tom Thumb golf course, next to the Tennis courts was converted to a children’s play area.
