"The Old Post Office" Colchester Road, Wix (1905) By F.Newell of Manningtree
The Old Post office in Wix, Essex was run by a Sub-Postmaster, William Paskell who lived in the thatched cottage, which is located today, opposite the present day Post Office in Colchester Road.
According to Wix History buffs, around this time, a postcard could be sent from Wix via Manningtree, using horse drawn transport at a cost of only one old penny (12 of these made up one shilling, which is the equivalent of a modern 5p piece),arriving at Harwich the following morning.

~ 03_Wix Green Post Office & General Stores, Essex (1908) F.Newhall H&D ~
Wix Green Post Office & General Stores (C.Gladwin) around 1908.
Wix has had a postal service for over 150 years, here the Post Office and shop were based in
"Chamberlains" (which used to be the Cobblers), located on the Green opposite the War Memorial in Harwich Road. In those days a postcard could be sent from Wix via Manningtree using horse transport at a cost of one old penny, arriving at Harwich the following morning. Not a bad service, even by today's standards.
