Cliff Road, Dovercourt looking South East towards Marine Parade
Third Avenue (Avenue Number Three) Dovercourt, Essex (1913) by Wallis.
Originally named "Avenue Number Three", this road links Fronks Road and Lee Road, it was one of five built by the Chelmsford Land Company, which included First Avenue, Second Avenue, Elmhurst Road and Lee Road.
The road building was started in the 1890's by Henry Lee, but unfortunately he went bankrupt, so the Chelmsford Land Company took over and finished the job. The 300ft tall chimney in the background, was built around 1880 & known as "Patricks Shaft", marking the location of the cement works or locally as "The Dump".
This huge chimney belched smoke, from burning waste, however the chimney was eventually demolished in 1939, to avoid being a geographical location marker for the German Luftwaffe, during WW2.
