Earhlams Beach (1961) F Pawsey & Son H&D
Postcards of Irlam’s (Earlam’s) Beach to the West of Dovercourt are rare. The beach itself conjures up memories of banks of mud, sandy bays, patches of rock and creeks along with war defences. Time spent looking for spent bullets and lug worms at low tide, filled many a day. However we were always wary of not getting cut off by the tide, so always a timely route back was required.
Earhlams Beach Flooded (December 1921) H&D FW
In December 1921 there was a major flooding event at Dovercourt, from the odd angles of the Beach Huts, it looks like the photographer has captured the position shortly after the event.

59763 Dovercourt. Beach & Shelter (1926) Photochrom F
A busy summer beach scene, with buckets and spades galore, this photograph was taken during the building of the new promenade, with the boys looking a little camera shy, while the girls, taking full advantage of the early photo shoot. In the background are the "Tea Rooms" opposite the Phoenix Hotel by the Retreat, along with the Cliff Hotel and leading lights, by the side. This postcard is yet another "real photograph" from the famous Photochrom Co Ltd publishers, who produced cards from around 1896 and based in London and Tunbridge Wells, England.
This firm originally produced Christmas cards and became a major publisher and printer of tourist albums, guide books, and postcards that mostly captured worldwide views as real photos or were printed in black & white, monochrome, and colour. They also published many advertising, comic, silhouette, novelty, panoramic, and notable artist signed cards in named series as well. The number of titles Photochrom produced may exceed 40,000.

Dovercourt Bay (1920) Wallis H&D
A busy summer beach scene, with buckets and spades galore, this photograph was taken just prior to the building of the new promenade, with the boys looking less than impressed, while the girls, taking full advantage of the early photo-shoot. In the background are the "Tea Rooms" opposite the Phoenix Hotel by the Retreat, along with the Cliff Hotel and leading lights, by the side. This postcard is yet another "real photograph" from the famous Wallis, who produced cards from around 1910 to the late 1930's.
The Sands. Dovercourt (1923) Wallis H&D F
A busy beach scene with large family groups off the main beach (probably due to the high tide) with heavy clothing and bonnets, suggesting it could be late spring or even early Autumn. In the background is the "Electric World" attraction next to the Phoenix Hotel on the Retreat. The introduction of Electricity was an exciting new phase in the 1920's, which at the beginning of the 1920s, fewer than 10% of British households were wired to an electricity supply network and most of those were wired for lighting only. Gas remained the main domestic fuel. This postcard is yet another "real photograph" from the famous Wallis, who produced cards from around 1910 to the late 1930's.

Dovercourt Bay (1923) by Wallis H&D
A busy beach scene in the height of summer, with empty beach huts being a rarity, its amusing that the boys are wearing ties and the ladies in best dresses and bonnets. This photograph was taken just prior to the building of the new promenade. In the background we can see the "Tea Rooms" opposite the Phoenix Hotel, along with the Cliff Hotel and leading lights, out to sea. This postcard is yet another "real photograph" from the famous local "Wallis" photographic studios, based in Dovercourt. Other cards shown here, are from the same publisher covering the period 1920 - 1923.

139686 Dovecourt (1931) Bells H&D C F
The 1930's marked a transition from "children only" bathing to "family" bathing, however "Sunday Best" was still order of the day.
While on the promenade, a more liberal attitude towards dress sense was developing.
The "Bathing machines" had disappeared, replaced by "changing rooms " on the promenade.
The Amusements, Pheonix Hotel and the newly opened Cliff Pavilion can be seen in the background.
This postcard was part of the Bells's Photography series , who produced cards for 45 years from 1905 - 1950.
