#96827 Dovercourt Beach, Essex, August 1924 - produced by Bell's Photography.
This unusual and rare beach scene, was taken at high tide (near the bottom of Beach Road) it shows families huddled on deckchairs in the narrow promenade beside the lighthouse. Alongside we see a stall selling carbonated drinks (marble top bottles), ice cream and other snacks. In the background is the War Department, the Stone Pier and further afield, the undeveloped port of Felixstowe (without the carnage of deep water cranes and shipping, blotting the landscape).
This photograph was taken shortly after the building of the new promenade around 1922/23, at the same time as the building of the new road along Lower Marine Parade. The postcard itself is part of the famous Bell's series, who produced cards from around 1905 to the late 1940's, with this particular Dovercourt set covering the year 1924 (#96810 - #96836), however this card appears to be a "File Copy" and as such may not have been commercially sold, as it has some blurring to the left hand side.
